But it doesn’t have to be that way. One of the best ways to get comfortable in front of the camera is to have an engagement photo session, also known as an e-session. An e-session is a photo session in which the photographer takes a photojournalistic approach to your photos. Most men, after the initial shock actually find it is fun to have an e-session shoot. Because an e-session is meant to be more of a lifestyle shoot — it gives the couple a chance to be themselves and just have fun interacting with each other. It typically only takes about 10 minutes before a couple becomes less camera aware.

As a side benefit, this gives the photographer and the couple a chance to get to know each other a little better and what to expect on the wedding day. According to Garrett Nudd, an acclaimed wedding photographer, “People really do get excited about them because they know it's something we offer and they're not the typical stand and face each other and place her hand on his shoulder with her ring showing shot. The real value is getting to know our couples. We don't "require" an e-session, but they're strongly suggested. I notice a marked difference when I shoot a wedding with a couple who we didn't do an e-session with beforehand vs. one that we did. They're especially helpful when the groom wasn't a part of the initial client meetings because he's often the hardest one to win over.”
